Full Circle: Hildegard of Bingen

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course explores the extraordinary life and work of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), a 12th-century German Benedictine nun, mystic, composer, doctor, herbalist, and artist. We will delve into her profound contributions to catholic and medieval culture, examining how her unique artistic, theological, and scientific pursuits were interwoven. The course will focus on her illuminated manuscripts, her mandalas and music as a central entry point, analyzing their intricate compositions as expressions of her divine visions and complex worldview. We will compare and connect her works with other lineages from around the world. Through a close study of her work, we will unpack the social, political, and spiritual context of the High Middle Ages, understanding how Hildegard's genius pushed the boundaries of what was possible for a woman in her time.
COURSE CONTENT
The course is structured to provide a holistic view of Hildegard's multifaceted work:

An overview of 12th-century Europe, the role of women in the monastic tradition, and the historical events that shaped her life and writings.

A detailed analysis of the artwork from her major theological work, Scivias (Know the Ways). We will examine the distinct visual language, symbolic iconography, and the process of creating these masterpieces.

An exploration of the spiritual and philosophical ideas conveyed in her writings and illustrations, including her concepts of the cosmos, the divine, and the human soul.

A look at her musical compositions, particularly her liturgical drama Ordo Virtutum (Play of the Virtues), and how music served as a vehicle for her spiritual expression.

A study of her lesser-known works on natural history (Physica) and medicine (Causae et Curae), demonstrating her scientific curiosity and practical knowledge of the natural world.
